My path to the Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts began through my connection to a family member in the neighbourhood. After years of coming to the Downtown Eastside to spend time with my relative, I came to understand and appreciate the diversity, the vibrancy, and the many challenges facing this community.
I began to do volunteer work in the area, and started participating in a quilt making workshop and found myself transformed by the experience. I was struck by the healing power and strength of creating fabric art. It was empowering to share stories, creativity, challenges and hope with each other. Having a safe and nurturing place to make art and build new friendships is a gift for all of us. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and listen to those around me and it is my privilege to be a part of an environment that builds community and strength through participation in arts programs.
